It goes without saying that an eco-friendly golfer would never litter during his or her round. In fact, many golfers will pick up trash that they see on the golf course and throw it out, even when it does not belong to them. Picking up litter is a simple and easy way to become more eco-friendly.
However, there is certain type of littering on the golf course that has become almost acceptable. I’m talking about littering the tee box with golf tees! Although
most golf tees are typically made from wood, they are not altogether harmless. Golf course superintendents blame tee box litter with damaging equipment, particularly mower blades. Did you know that splintered tees left behind on the course can also puncture golf cart tires? So next time, even if it is splintered, be sure to pick up your tee after you hit.
And if you would like to make an even greater impact, you can invest in eco-tees. Eco-tees are synthetic tees that can reduce tee box litter by 90%. Most golfers who use these tees only use one or two for an 18-hole round because they are less likely to splinter. To top it all off, they are made with degradable materials and are kinder to the earth than wooden tees if they be left behind on the course. They do not puncture tires or damage mower blades.
So to all of you eco-friendly junior golfers- be sure to pick up litter on the course, even when it’s your own splintered tee! Also, you can ask the pro shop where you play if they carry environmentally-friendly golf tees. Mother earth and the mower blades will thank you for it!
